She is best known for her roles in the films Ragtime, Once Upon a Time in America, and The Wings of the Dove, and for her Emmy-nominated role as Cora Crawley in the hit TV show Downton Abbey. McGovern was born in Evanston, Illinois, and began her acting career in the early 1980s. She has since appeared in over 40 films, television shows, and stage productions. In addition to her acting, McGovern is also an accomplished musician, having released two albums, The Ghost of You and A Different Life. She currently resides in London with her husband, film director Simon Curtis.
