Dommartin was born in Paris, France and studied acting at the Conservatoire National Suprieur d'Art Dramatique. She began her career in French television before making her feature film debut in 1986. She went on to appear in a number of films, including the critically acclaimed Wings of Desire, which won the Palme d'Or at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.
In addition to her acting career, Dommartin wrote and directed two short films, The Passengers (1996) and The Sky Turns (1997). She also wrote and directed the feature film, The Sky Turns (1999).
