Kirshner was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1975. She attended the Toronto French School and later attended McGill University in Montreal, where she studied Russian literature and international studies.
Kirshner began her career as a model and appeared in several music videos before making her film debut in Exotica in 1994. She has since appeared in numerous films and television shows, including The Black Dahlia, The L Word, and 24.
Kirshner is also an advocate for human rights and has worked with organizations such as Amnesty International, the International Crisis Group, and the United Nations. In 2006, she wrote a book about her experiences with human rights organizations called I Live Here.
