Marie Burgun (1812-1883) was a French composer and music teacher. She was born in the French commune of Montpellier and was educated in music at the Conservatoire de Paris. She was the first woman to be admitted to the Conservatoire in 1836, and she was awarded the Second Prize in Harmony the following year. Burgun went on to teach at the Conservatoire and at the Paris Conservatory of Music. She wrote several works for orchestra, chamber music, and songs. Her compositions were praised for their melodic beauty and for their innovative use of harmony. Burgun was an important figure in the development of French music in the 19th century.
